Guuulp! Bush Alienating Saudis?
You know you’re in trouble, White House style, when Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, commenting about the United States’ presence in Iraq, characterized it as an “illegitimate foreign occupation.” In the past four years, Saudi Arabia has been alternatively silent and reported miffed at the more recent push for withdrawal of troops, fearing the proverbial power vacuum experts predicted would result from Bush’s war in Iraq. Duh.
Quite a few bloggers have commented about how hard the White House has worked to appease Saudi Arabia about the situation in the Middle East. A couple have speculated that the U.S. was “enlisted” to do the Saudi’s dirty work (to help control the price of oil). I’m not sure about that. This whole campaign reeks of White House arrogance. Still, this latest criticism must really sting.
It kind of makes you wonder who’s left in the Bush-Cheney corner . . .
