Bush Boogies for Malaria Awareness
On Malaria Awareness Day earlier this week, President George W. Bush zealously performed with West African dancers in the Rose Garden. Watching him reinforced my longstanding belief that I could easily party with this guy — he looks like he’s a lot of fun at parties — but I wouldn’t let him drive me home later. He’s just not designated-driver material. Gives me chills to think he’s still behind the wheel of our country. I guess we’re all still waiting (some of us eagerly, others not) for Democrats in Congress to hit the brakes. Given the narrow passage in the House this morning for the bill proposing troop withdrawal starting in October, I don’t see that happening any time soon.
Still, I guess it’s okay that the U.S. occupation in Iraq shows no signs of letting up. It must not be too bad after all, since according to Laura Bush, no one is affected more about Iraq than she and the President. Given the way they were dancing in the Rose Garden, the rest of us are probably worried about nothing.
Malaria kills 3,000 children a day in Africa — 3,000! It’s amazing to think that a disease that’s practically unheard of in our culture remains such a threat in other parts of the world. Why can’t we stop it? To learn more about this issue and how you can help, check out Ashley Judd’s April 24, 2007 article, “How a $10 Net Can Stop a Killer.”
